Junior Year
Spring 2025 - Research and Planning
-
Choosing the right degree program is especially important when applying to UK universities. This is because you’ll begin studying your chosen major(s) from day one (no general education requirements!) and switching courses or transferring universities is often difficult, if not impossible.
Essential Research:
Which subject(s) you want to study as your UK university degree major(s)
What type of degree structure best suits your learning style and goals
Where in the UK or Ireland you’d like to live and study for the next 3+ years
With over 160 globally recognized and accredited UK universities and many thousands of course options available, there’s definitely something for everyone.
Explore undergraduate degree courses and UK universities at UCAS.com, or contact Jo to talk it all through.
-
UK university offers are usually conditional on you meeting specific academic thresholds by the end of 12th grade latest. These requirements vary both by course and by university, so it’s very important to ensure you know what is required.
Essential Steps
Check general university entry requirements for US students
Visit the “USA Entry Requirements” page on the university’s website. This will tell you which combination of qualifications—such as APs, SAT/ACT, advanced classes and GPA—you need to meet the minimum entry criteria.
Example: University of Edinburgh’s – USA Entry Requirements.
Review specific course requirements
Equally important is to check the entry requirements for your specific degree course. Many UK undergraduate programs require you to have studied certain high school classes at an advanced level and/or specific APs.
Example: University of Edinburgh – BSc Engineering Entry Requirements: This course at Edinburgh requires advanced-level Mathematics, plus at least one advanced course in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science/Computing, Design, or Engineering, and a third advanced-level subject.
To be considered for this course, you must show on your UCAS form that you are expecting to meet these course specific entry requirements by the end of 12th grade.
-
It probably goes without saying—if you’re taking AP exams, aim for the highest scores possible. Many UK universities ask for a minimum of two or three APs at grades 4 & 5 but some of the most competitive institutions, such as Cambridge, UCL, and LSE, require at least five APs at grades 5,5,5,5,5.
If your school doesn’t offer APs, all is not lost—increasing numbers of UK universities now accept strong high school grades or college credit as an alternative.
While a high GPA is always helpful, a perfect 4.0 is not essential. What matters most is earning strong grades in 11th and 12th grade particularly and in the subjects most closely related to your intended degree course.
An ACT or SAT score can also be helpful for UK university admissions, particularly if you’re not taking any other standardized tests.
-
UK universities do not expect students to have met all academic entry requirements at the time of application. This means what you study in 12th grade—and the grades you achieve—can make all the difference to the success of your application.
After you have fully researched the academic requirements for your chosen UK universities and degree courses, you can plan your senior-year schedule to help meet those expectations.
For example: If your intended degree course requires Advanced Chemistry and you haven’t taken it yet, make sure it’s included in your 12th grade classes.
If a course requires 3 APs or 3 advanced-level high school classes, ensure you're on track to complete them by the end of senior year.
Thoughtful 12th grade course planning shows UK admissions that you’re academically prepared, and serious about your chosen subject.
Summer 2025 - Essay Writing and Super-curricular activities
-
Applicants to UK universities can apply to a maximum of five undergraduate courses.
The summer before senior year is a great time to start narrowing down your choices. Use this time to finalize your research and start identifying which courses and universities feel like the best fit for you.
Consider:
Course content and structure
Academic entry requirements
Application process
What it’s like to live and study in that location
Starting early will help you feel more confident when it’s time to make your final decisions.
-
UK universities don’t place too much weight on extracurricular activities. Being a team captain, organization president, or involved in lots of clubs won’t necessarily strengthen your application—unless these experiences clearly show transferable skills related to your chosen degree major(s).
What matters most is your commitment to your chosen academic course. This is where super-curricular activities come in.
Super-curriculars relate to the independent learning you do beyond your regular schoolwork, to deepen your knowledge of the subject you want to study at university. These might include:
Reading academic books or articles
Listening to podcasts or watching lectures
Attending talks, seminars, or exhibitions
Completing online courses
Entering essay competitions
Doing research or independent projects
The summer before senior year is a great time to continue to explore your academic interests more deeply—and doing so will help you write a strong and compelling UK personal statement.

👉Why Super-Curricular Activities Matter for UK University Applications
-
One of the advantages of applying to UK universities is that you only need to write one application essay—the UCAS Personal Statement—which is sent to all five of your university choices.
Because of this, your Personal Statement must:
Focus on your chosen subject, not a specific university
Be equally relevant to all five courses you’re applying for
Avoid mentioning any university by name (doing so can hurt your chances with the others)
The UK Personal Statement is completely different from a US college essay. Rather than telling your personal story, the focus should be on your academic interest in your future degree major(s).
The UK Personal Statement is your opportunity to:
Demonstrate your enthusiasm and motivation for your future degree course
Explain why you want to study it
Highlight relevant skills, experiences, and super-curricular activities that show your readiness to succeed in the course
From 2025 there is a new structure for the UCAS Personal Statement. It’s important to understand these changes so you can approach your writing effectively and meet the updated expectations.

A small number of UK university courses require you to take an admissions test as part of the application process. Entrance tests are especially common for competitive subjects such as Medicine, Law, and Math, and at universities like Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, LSE and Imperial College London.
If you haven’t already, it’s important to check now whether any of your chosen universities or degree course requires an entrance test, as some have registration deadlines in the summer or early fall.
You can find resources online to help you prepare for these admissions test or you could work with a specialized tutor (contact Jo for more information).
Take a look at my updated UK University Admissions Tests post for more information.
Other UK courses such as fine art, stage management and architecture may require a portfolio so now is the time to research and complete these requirements.
“The most impressive applicants to UK universities are not necessarily the busiest—they’re the most intellectually curious about the subject they want to study.”
Senior Year
Fall 2025 – Time to Apply
Aim to submit your UCAS application as early as possible. It’s a great feeling to get it done—and even better when UK university offers start coming in—sometimes within just a few weeks and can be well before U.S. Early Decision results are released!
-
September 2nd is the first date you can officially submit your UCAS application. However, most students don’t apply this early, and many universities don’t begin reviewing applications until later in the month.
While I encourage U.S. students to apply as early as possible, it’s important to coordinate with your high school counselor, who will need time to prepare and submit your reference and predicted grades. In most cases, a realistic target is to submit your application in late September or October.
-
In September you should refine your list down to final selection of five courses. Aim for a balanced mix that includes:
Ambitious (stretch) choices
Strong (realistic) options
Safe (backup) choices
Make sure you’ve checked the entry requirements for each course and that your application will be competitive across the board.
-
Your Personal Statement should be carefully tailored to reflect your final five course choices and clearly demonstrate your academic interests, motivation, and suitability for the degree major(s) you’re applying to.
Don’t be tempted to reuse your Common App essay—the UK Personal Statement has a very different focus and structure. A Common App essay typically centers on personal stories and character, while the UK version is an academically driven piece designed to show why you’re a strong candidate for a specific subject.
If you’re unsure whether your statement hits the mark, ask Jo for a Personal Statement review—getting expert feedback can make a big difference.
And remember: this is not the time to be modest. Clearly outlining your achievements, interests, and relevant experiences is not bragging—as long as it’s truthful, it’s exactly what admissions tutors want to see.
-
Submitting your UCAS application as early as possible can be an advantage—especially for UK universities operating rolling admissions. In many cases, early applicants receive offers within weeks.
However, keep in mind that not all universities follow rolling admissions. Some institutions wait until after the January Equal Consideration Deadline to review applications and issue decisions. Be sure to check each university’s admissions approach so you know what to expect.
-
If you’re applying to either Oxford, Cambridge or any university for Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Science, your completed UCAS application must be submitted by October 15th 2025, 6pm UK time . Be aware that your school will likely set an earlier internal deadline so they have time to review and add your academic reference.
If you miss the October 15th, 6pm (UK time) deadline, your application for these courses will not be considered.
You don’t have to include all five choices at this point. If you’re applying to an early deadline course, you can submit those now and add the remaining choices later (as long as they don’t have the same deadline).
-
A select number of UK universities courses may require interviews, auditions, portfolios, or admissions tests. Make sure you understand what’s needed for each of your choices.
Winter 2025/2026 - Offers and Visits
Aim to submit UK university applications as early as possible (October or November!!) but preferably before the January 29th UCAS Equal Consideration deadline.
-
To guarantee your application is given equal consideration to other applicants, you must submit by this date (but the deadline for Oxbridge, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science is much earlier—October 15th).
US and other international students can still apply to UK universities after this date, but some popular courses may begin to close.
Read my ‘UCAS Equal Consideration Deadline’ post to learn more:
-
UCAS Extra is a service that allows students who used all five choices on their UCAS application and didn’t receive any offers (or declined them) to apply to additional universities, one at a time. It runs from late February to early July and gives applicants another chance to secure a place.
-
Visiting UK Universities: When, Why, and What If You Can’t?
Visiting your UK universities after receiving offers is a great way to get figure out where you want to go. If you want to avoid missing too much school, MLK Weekend in January or Presidents’ Week in February are ideal times—UK universities will be in full session, giving you an authentic feel for the campus and student life.
Try to avoid the weeks around Christmas / New Year and Easter, as universities will be closed or much quieter than usual due to the holiday break.
Spring 2026 - Finalize UK University Choices
Spring 2026 is the time to make your final UK university decisions. Keep in mind that some universities may not release their decisions until as late as April—this is not necessarily a reflection on the strength of your application, but can be due to the university’s admissions timeline or the high volume of applications being processed.
-
Unless you’ve received unconditional offers, your senior year grades and AP results may be critically important in securing your place at a UK university. Most offers are conditional, meaning your place depends on achieving specific results. Even after offers come in, it’s essential to maintain strong academic performance—falling short of the conditions could mean losing your spot. So stay focused and finish the year strong!
-
When deciding between UK university offers, take time to carefully compare course content, teaching style, and assessment methods—these can vary significantly even for the same degree course. Also consider the campus environment, location, and the overall student experience, including clubs & societies, accommodation, and international student support.
Don’t forget to look closely at the conditions of each offer—for example, what grades are required, whether specific subjects are needed, and how realistic it is to meet them. Comparing these elements side by side will help you make a confident, well-informed decision about where you'll thrive academically and personally.
-
When responding to your UCAS offers, you can select a Firm choice and an Insurance choice:
Firm choice: This is your preferred university. If the offer is unconditional, your place is confirmed. If it's conditional, your place is secured upon meeting the specified requirements.
Insurance choice: This serves as your backup option, typically with lower entry requirements, in case you don't meet the conditions of your Firm choice.
It's important to note that you can only choose an Insurance option if your Firm offer is conditional. Once you accept a Firm and an Insurance offer, all other offers are automatically declined.
If you receive your last decision on or before 31 March 2026, your reply date is 6 May 2026 (except if you're using Extra to find a place).
If you receive your last decision on or before 13 May 2026, your reply date is 3 June 2026 (except if you're using Extra to find a place).
If you receive your last decision on or before 15 July 2026, your reply date is 22 July 2026 (including Extra choices).
For more detailed information, please refer to UCAS's official guidance on replying to undergraduate offers:
-
After choosing your Firm UK university, you’ll receive information from them on how to apply for student housing, known in the UK as Halls of Residence.
University Halls of Residence are typically on or near campus and are where most first-year students live. Each university has its own housing application process and deadlines, so it’s important to follow the instructions carefully and apply as early as possible to increase your chances of getting your preferred accommodation type. Halls can vary in size, cost, catering options, and social atmosphere—so do your research and think about what kind of environment will help you thrive.
-
Once you’ve met the conditions of your Firm choice offer (or your Insurance choice, if applicable) and confirmed your place, your university will issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)—a required document for your UK Student Visa application. You’ll then apply for your visa online, typically no earlier than six months before your course start date, using the CAS details provided by your university.
Summer 2026: Still Looking? UCAS ‘Clearing’ Opens July 5th
UCAS Clearing for 2025 entry opens on July 5th, 2025. This process allows students who haven’t received UK university offers—or who want to apply to different courses—to apply for university places that still have availability. It’s a great opportunity to explore new options, but you should be flexible with course and university choices.
Important: Even if you haven’t applied to UK universities earlier in the year, you can open a new application now for 2025 entry and go through the Clearing process.
